The Crusades: The two parties that was fighting in the Canterbury Tales were the muslims and the christians. . It lasted several hundred years and started in the 11th century.Every crusader took a vow that he or she was committed to fulfill as a penance. It seemed to me that it was a very intense period of fighting. The fighting between the Muslims and the christians didn't really make that much sense to me. Especially the fact that the fight lasted for several hundred years.
Murder of Thomas A Becket: In the Murder of Thomas A Becket, Becket did not agree with Henry being against the pope. Becket and Henry already argued, they argued about how much power church courts should have . Henry and Becket came to this agreement about Becket becoming archbishop again in 1170. Becket and Henry fell out again and Becket was being cruel and start chastising Henry all in public. Henry I guess got fed up and he sent his people to kill Becket. I found it interesting that he by walked barefoot from London to Canterbury.
Magna Carta: The Magna Carta is a document that states that people have individual rights and that there are certian things that the king has no control over.Magna Carter: The Magna Carter is a document that states that people have individual rights anf that there are things that some people have that the king cannot control. The Magna Carter was written by artistocrats. The document had years later became the basis for the english constitutional law.
The Black Death: The disease "Bubonic Plague" is where the name black death came from. It is the nick name for the disease. The disease is very contagious. The disease was spread by infected fleas on rats. It is caused by the bacterium Yersinia Pestis and the epidemic caused the deaths of one third of the population.
Madam Eglantyne- She came across very classy and well educated. A very attractive woman
"And well she sang a service, with a fine intoning through her nose, as was most seemly, and she spoke daintly in French, extremely, after the school of Stratford-atte-Bowe."
Squire: He was portrayed as a very calm and laid back man. Very handsome and a gentleman.
"He could make songs and poems and recite, knew how to joust and dance, to draw and write , he loved so hotly that till dawn grew pale ."
Monk: He was very interested and enjoyed hunting from what I understood. Loved an adventure.
"Hunting a hare or riding at a fence was all his fun, he spared for no expense."
Merchant: I think the monk thinks very highly of himself. Alot of self confidence maybe a little arrogant.
"Forking beard and motley dress, high on his horse he sat, upon his head a Flemish beaver hat and on his feet daintly buckled boots. He old of his opinions, and pursuits and how he never lost."
Doctor of Medicine- Physician cared for his patients and saved many of them.
"To speak of medicine and surgery. He cared for and saved a patient many times."
Friar- A very festive,he spoke very well and was like by all.
"A very festive man.Equal his gossip and well-spoken speech."
Franklin- Franklin was a good provider. He maintained a stable household.
"His house was never short of food and pies."
The Yeoman- A hunter and a woods man that broke away from being a servant
"No more servants, for he chose so to ride"
Knight-He was known as a gentlemen for being honest, strong man.
Clerk- The clerk was a slim man and also a philosopher from Oxford. "As lean was his horse as is a rake."4. The Prioress- This story to me crazy but it also was kind of touching. The feudalism system is what the people in Prioress lived by. Under lords and the reach lived peasents who were most often christian. There was a young christian boy who lived with his mom who was a widow. The christian boy worshiped Mary the mother of Jesus and he learned a song by the name of Alma Redemptions. The young boy everywhere he went would sing the song. One day he was singing the song walking through the Jewish quaters. On day while walking through Jewish quaters the boy was singing a song and the Jewels felt like he was being disrespectful and just killed him. His mother looked all over the place for him and eventually found him dead. They prepared the boys funreal and the ceremony stated. The boy then rose explained his death and contiued to sing the Alma Redemption.

The Romantic and Victorian Period
In america an age of revolution swept across Western Europe in 1776. It included political, economic, and social forces. During the next century some of the most radical changes ever experienced in human life occured. In 1825 it was a turbulant age, England from an agricultural based society to a industrial nation. The working concentrated primarily in teeming mill towns in Central and North England.
The more radical revolution in France, which started on July 14, 1979, with the storming of the prision, Bastille which had far more serious reprecussions. For the ruling class in England, the French revolution came to represent their worst fears: the overthrow of an anointed king by a democratic rabble. English conservatives feared that the revolutinary fever would spread across the channel. King Charles, an english king had lost his head in 1649: they feared that another bloody rebellion against vested authority was more than most powerholders in England could bear.
It sounds like to me that both of these periods were influenced by fear and bloodshed. Turmoil spread with the occurence of the revolution. Napoleon's armies were outnumbered by british forces. The industrial revolution occured during the romantic period which means goods that were once made by hand were then switched to factory machines. This caused alot of chaos among the working class. This meant people were going to be out of jobs because of the lack of need for them.
I think these periods changed the world for many generations to come because the world slowly went from agricultural based to machine based society's. If you ask me i think it ruined our society. Because people apperciated things much more when they had to make it themselves. Now everything is mass marketed and we waste alot. I learned alot from reading about these periods.
"THE TYGER""tyger! tyger! burning brightinthe forests of the night,What immortal hand or eyecould frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skiesBurnt the fire of thine eyes?On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire? And what shoulder, and what art,Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat,What dread hand? and what dread feet? What the hammer? what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain ?what the anvil? What dread graspDare its deadly terrors clasp? When the stars threw down their spears,And watered heaven with their tears,Did he smile his work to see?Did he who made the lamb make thee?Tyger! Tyger! burning brightinthe forests of the night,What immortal hand or eye,Dare frame thy fearful symmetry
This poem wasn't exactly romantic to me. It was kinda twisted I mean their talking about hammers and chains...
In the Victorian period which became very different from the romantic, authors and poets had a different way of expressing thoughts and ideas. Alfred, Lord Tennyson was a very good poet, considered once the greatest living English poet. Tennyson always had and never lost the melancholy and sense of chaos that friends and reviewers in his early poems. He was very popular because his poems spoke a beautiful measured language of sense and regarding the sadness of life. This can be seen in one of his poems;
“Tears, Idle Tears”“Tears idle tears, I know not what they mean,Tears from the depth of some divine despairRise in the heart, and gather to the eyes,In looking on the happy autumn fields, and thinking of theDays that are no more.Fresh as the first beam glittering on a snail, that brings ourFriends up from the under world, sad as the last which reddensOver one-That sinks with all we love below the verge:So sad, so fresh, the days that are no more.Ah, sad and strange as in dark summer dawnsThe earliest pipe of half-awakened birdsTo dying ears, when unto dying eyesThe casement slowly grows a glimmering square; So sad, so strange, the days that are no more.Dear as remembered kisses after death, and sweet as those byHopeless fancy feigned-On lips that are for others; deep as love,Deep as first love, and wild with all regret;O death in life, the days that are no more.”This poem takes effect in a emotional perspective probably to the concern of Tennyson at the time. The poem I believe has words that would conclude to the
reader as aspects of the way of life, Tennyson includes “days that are no more” which I believe regards to the end of life or death. In stanza# 2; “Tears from the depth of some divine despair”, I believe Alfred regards to the involvement of something in the religious aspect, perhaps it relates to Adam and Eve’s fall in genesis
This is definatly a very different emotional approach than the Tyger.

Beowulf and The Anglo Saxons
I found the story of Beowulf very disturbing and twisted. It was a very gory story. Grendel was a lonley bloodthirsty monster ready for his next victim. In fact he got pleasure out of murder. He was very feared by the people of Herot. They feared their lives every night at the mead hall.
Beowulf was known as a great monster slayer. He had defeated and killed some of the most intimidating monsters known to man. He came from across the sea to Herot to save the people by killing their monster that was terrorizing the land.
Beowulf was awaiting for Grendels arrival at the hall one night. Grendel broke the door down and the first geat he came across he ripped him apart and drank the blood from his veins and bolted his hands and feet down. I found this very twisted. The battle went on and Beowulf defeated Grendel. He hung the remains of his arsm on the rafters at the hall. At one point Grendels mother that lurked beneth the water came in and took Grendels remains back with her. What really stuck out to me about this is the fact Beowulf went after. her. He jumped into the lake and she took hold of him within her claws. Something that impressed me was how much confidence Beowulf had in himself. He seemed to be just a regular man taking on scary monsters that were three times bigger and stronger than he was. But somehow he always defeated and killed them. I really enjoyed reading this story. It opened my mind up a little to what was going on.
About the Anglo Saxon culture. I thought it was a very chaotic period and I wouldn't have wanted to be alive then. But this era indeed had a huge influence on generations to come. We have learned alot from them and how they lived.
Compared to this story, where Beowulf was from he was the big hero. As in any other stories most of the heroes always ending up dying or getting hurt. People like Beowulf want to fight for the right things and help people out. (Compare him to super-man). Super-man flew around helping people . Beowulf went helping people when he heard something bad was happening somewhere he knew of."I feared no one.I awaited my destiny well:never did I plot a quarrel, never did I swear an unjust oath.I take joy in this, despite a mortal wound. The Ruler of Mankind will not charge that I murdered a kinsman when my life departs this body(Beowulf)". Spider-man and Batman, didn't fear anyone just as Beowulf didn't fear anyone. The difference with Beowulf is that he prayed that God will always be there with him through what ever fight he was going up against. I've never seen Batman or Spider-man pray in there movies.

Mentor Log October 1st 4 hours
I met my mentor at her house and we drove to Madison county to someone's house that has made a huge telescope in their yard. I interviewed them and talked with them for a long time about what all they have had the chance to see while using the telescope. I then looked into it myself and saw the beautiful mysteries. I then took some pictures of it to add to my portfolio. They gave me some very useful information to use for my project. We then went to the UGA science libary and looked at some books. The idea for my project is to determine which planets are in controversry about whether or not life could exist on other planets. Then research what would happen if they came here and what we could possibly face like diseases when you mix races that are unfamilar with each other. I have a couple of interviews to use also and I want to present a documentary for my project. I have alot of ideas i'm just working on organizing them and putting my project together to make the best grade possible.
The lost boy week 6
David and another foster child went out riding their bikes one afternoon and the ended up on David's street where he used to live with his mother. David dared Larry jr to ride by the house just to feel the freedom and he promised there was no harm involved. He finally convinced Larry to go along with it so they did. As they rode by david saw his brothers peek out of the blinds. He paniced and pedeled his bike as fast as he could. Larry tried to convince his that he was just paranoid and nobody saw them. When they returned home Mrs. Cantensze their foster mom was furious. She told them that Davids mother called and wanted to know why he was out causing trouble. But he wasn't at all and his mother tried to threaten Mrs. Cantenze that if she couldn't take care of the boy she would have to find someone who could. Needless to say the boys were grounded and explained what could happen if they ever do anything like that again.

The lost boy week 1
i was reading the secret but i switched to the lost boy. It's been very interesting...it's about a little boy that is a slave to his mother. She tortures him and makes him do awful things. She makes him sleep on a hard army cot in the basement and he can't come out unless she calls for him. She beats him and she's even broken his bones. She has done this for years until his teachers at school done sometjhing about it. He was deprived of food and had to eat out of the garbage. He came to school with gashes marks and bruises. the law finally got involved when they were notified by the school and took him from his mother and placed him in foster care. he grew very attached to his social worker and she became the only one he trusted. There were like seven other kids in the foster home. He was treated like a normal child which he wasn't used to that. There is a court date against his mother that they are preparing for.
